LABEL LABORIE
JAZZ & WORLD MUSIC

As part of the developing activities at the Centre Culturel de Rencontre La Borie since 2002, throughout the year the Jazz and World Music department hosts musicians and composers who have a sound musical project which is productive in the exchange of ideas and in building their career. The Laborie label is a natural extension to this endeavour and is committed to supporting those artists who, in this context, reveal the best of themselves.
Talented young musicians now rub shoulders at La Borie with established personalities on the French or international music scene to build up a separate identity, a very special family whose only wish is to surprise you and let you savour the qualities of an artist when he is free.

A Time for Everything, the new opus as a trio,
Time for a trio

After performing more than a hundred solo concerts around the world, Yaron decided it was time to record his next album, his first as a trio. He took great care in choosing the partners who would join him. He again chose to make the recording while in residence at the Château de La Borie, which gave him the time to get to know his musicians, living alongside them before going into the recording studio. It gave them time for talking things over, changing things round, discovering each other, trying things out and playing. It just gave them time!

The choice of Gerald Cleaver is interesting. The young drummer from Detroit (Michigan) has travelled around the world playing with dozens of musicians including Miroslav Vitous, Matthew Shipp or Jacky Terrason. With his extensive range from be-bop to free jazz, Gerald Cleaver is an experienced and accomplished drummer and percussionist. His range, his poly-rhythmic sense, his spacial awareness, his strong ferocious groove make him the perfect partner for this trio.

Matthew Brewer is of the same generation as the others and though still little-known on this side of the Atlantic is on his way up. Favoured by Jef Tain Watts, Greg Osby or Gonzalo Rubalcaba for his ample, sure, precise drive, this musician has good references for someone who is not yet 25.

Time for Change

The trio format (piano, bass and drums - the favourite formula) is an incredible challenge for young artists. It's not easy for them to make their own place in the well-written history of this style of music, to make something original, new and personal next to such trios as Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea or Brad Meldhau and E.S.T. for more contemporary references.

The real challenge being to avoid falling into either of the common pitfalls that await young trios: producing an imitation of what has been done before and inevitably falling short of the mark or alternatively, aiming for originality at any cost. This trio quite unashamedly takes its inspiration from the spirit of the times. This album is neither jazz nor pop, it neither belongs, nor wishes to belong to any specific genre except that of the three musicians, witnesses of their own times and possessing a full knowledge of where their music comes from.

A cross between Scribine and Bjork, a classic like « in the wee small hours » and « Hallelujah » by Jeff Buckley, « Toxic » by Britney Spears and the traditional « Layla Layla », Police's « message in a bottle » and the very Monkish « Monkey Paradise », taking on collective compositions like MMM or the obsessive « Paluszki ». That's the challenge that this trio has pulled off. In the most uncomplexed, natural, creative and cheerful way they have reinvented the trio, swing and groove. The raging energy, the lunar lyricism, the tension, the perpetual invention of formats, a few light touches in post-production ( under the supervision of Jean- Pierre Taleb) make this an album unlike any other. Welcome to the personal universe of Yaron Herman and his trio, a place where there is time for everything.

The famous quote by Miles Davis « You live in a modern house. You drive a modern car. You watch modern television. Why make music that is antiquated? » takes on a new meaning after listening to « A Time for Everything ».

YARON HERMAN - « Variations » - Piano Solo
RELEASE APRIL 2006

Yaron Herman was born on 12th July 1981 at Tel Aviv. He began playing the piano relatively late at the age of 16 and his teacher is Opher Brayer. Just two years later, Yaron won the prestigious Rimon prize in the “Young Talent” category.
When Georges Avakian, who produced Miles Davis' legendary session “Kind of Blue” and Keith Jarrett's first recordings, was asked to give his opinion on this musical prodigy, his reply was short and to the point: “Yaron is the real thing.”
Even more surprising is the depth of the pianist's approach. He is developing a musical improvisation theory called “Real-time Composition”, which has led to him being invited by Laurent Cugny to give a series of conferences at the Sorbonne.
After working in residence for a few months at the Château de la Borie in a rare period of reflection and concentration, Yaron has just completed his first solo album on the brand new LaBorie Jazz label, where he presents his interpretation of “Thèmes et Variations.”
Now, at 24, the prodigious pianist is embarking on a series of mainly solo tours, to the great delight of a very appreciative audience that has been astounded by every performance of this truly exceptional musician.

BERTRAND RENAUDIN - « Les Fleurs auront toujours le dernier mot » - United Flowers
RELEASE APRIL 2006

He began his classical studies in 1968 at the Conservatoire de Rennes and was among the first of Dante Agostini and Kenny Clark's pupils. He discovered jazz in the '70s through, among others, the Eddy Louiss, René Thomas and Kenny Clark trio.
Winner of the Concours National de Jazz de la Défense (with his quartet) in 1988, he has dedicated himself to his own production since 1989.
He has a great love of travelling, whose influence colours his compositions, and makes numerous tours abroad under his own name. Since 1993, he has regularly stayed in different countries on the African continent to complete projects close to his heart. After some fifteen discs, he gained general public recognition with “L'arbre voyage” in 2000 and “Turbulent Silence” in 2003.
2006 marks his return to the recording scene with two new albums under the Laborie Jazz label: “Les fleurs auront toujours le dernier mot” with his United Flowers, a meticulous and melodic top class quartet; and “Doüo” (to be released in October), a new opus from his collaboration with guitarist Olivier Cahours, the confirmation of a perfect aesthetic and balance.
